Work from Home: A new experience

Since taking my new role at Avanade, I've been privileged with working from home. It's a first for me. I wasn't sure what to expect. For one, we have three kids, three bedrooms and no office, so my office is in my bedroom. But we found a nook where I could set up everything, and that has worked quite well.

I'm also quite disciplined in my passion for technology PR to be prevent the distractions of home life from interfering. In fact, having three kids -- 2, 4 and 10 -- has improved my concentration skills to such a degree that I can almost completely "tune out" all conversation taking place around me and read something (and comprehend what I'm reading). Unfortunately, that annoys select family members (especially my wife and 10 year old).

The biggest challenge is that I find it hard to create boundaries (when am I at work, and when am I not; when do the kids know I'm at "work" and when I'm not). But the upside is huge. Except for when I'm traveling, I eat breakfast with my family, lunch with my youngest kids most days, home when my 10 year old gets home from school and I can join them all for dinner almost regularly, get the youngest ones bathed, and continue work later if I need.

One exciting thing this week in the Olfert family -- on Thursday my wife and I drove into the city (San Francisco) to finalize my son's citizenship. So now we have two Koreans who are now American citizens. One last step and the adoption is all done. Yea!
